Y1 Ladybirds

Welcome to Year 1 - Ladybirds!

Well, that went fast! Autumn Term is finished and we are now into Spring Term 1.We had a fantastic first term and Miss Jermyn and I are so proud of how grown up all your children have become. Moving into year 1 from Foundation isn’t always easy but we are so impressed with everyone!

We still need to remember that to be ready to learn everyday your child will need:

  • Water bottle
  • PE kit (Monday) – change of shoes essential
  • Bookbag
  • Suitable clothing depending on weather – we will be going outside come rain, snow or blow.

Spring Term Overview

In Spring term 1, we are going to be learning about Winter and Winter animals, Traditional Tales. Spring Term 2 will see us busy learning about stories from other cultures and a special focus on Africa. In the Ladybirds our curriculum is more structured, however for us a priority is to keep the overall feel of the classroom and the children’s learning as play based as possible, as we feel this is how our children work and learn best. The enable this balance to work, we will have a more structured approach in the mornings and afternoons will be more of a play based curriculum. This allows us to cover all areas which need to be covered whilst still allowing the children the freedom to learn through exploration and hands on experience. As we are still very young we find it easier to do our work based on a book, so we have something to focus on.
The books we are working from are:

  • Polar Bear Polar Bear
  • The Little Penguin
  • Rumplestiltskin
  • The Little Red Hen
  • Handa’s Surprise
  • Handa’s Hen

Activities will include igloo art, silhouette pictures, story re telling, sequencing, money, number partitioning plus much, much more.

We would like to take this opportunity thank you for all your support during the first term and we look forward to the year ahead. If you have any questions, problems or would like to know more about how to support your child at home please come in to arrange a convenient time for discussion.
